Eat For a Happy Mind and Quality Sleep

The Hidden Alchemy in Food: How Tryptophan Transforms into Serotonin and Melatonin

You know those days when you feel just a little off… when your mood is fragile or sleep feels like a distant friend? I have been there too, and honestly, I notice it almost immediately and definitely the next day, when I'm not giving my body the foods and rhythms it needs to feel good.

Craig and I are caring for our senior fur babies, who awaken at 2 am, 4 am… who knows. We adore them, and they need us more deeply now. But it means we have had to adapt our ways, how we eat, when we rest, and how we create space to ensure we still get quality sleep and care for our health.

Because when you're up through the night and still want to show up fully, to give the depth of care they need, to work, to serve others, and to still have fun, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

"

You cannot pour from an empty cup, so fill yours first with love and care."

This weekend, I found myself pausing and remembering something I had almost forgotten… tryptophan. I smiled because I know how much of a difference it makes for mood and sleep when I gently weave more of those tryptophan-rich foods back in. It felt like one of those loving nudges from my body saying, Remember me, I know what you need.

The magic of tryptophan and 5-HTP

There is a beautiful little amino acid called tryptophan that our bodies turn into 5-HTP and then into serotonin, which supports a happier mood and melatonin, which supports deep, restful sleep. We do not get 5-HTP directly from food, but when we eat tryptophan-rich meals, we are giving our bodies the building blocks they need to work their magic.

Foods that help lift our mood and soothe our sleep 🌿

Turkey and chicken are so good in wraps or with roasted veggies.

Salmon and tuna bring extra love for our brains.

Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and chia are so easy to sprinkle on everything.

Tofu, tempeh and soy milk are beautiful plant-powered options.

Nuts like almonds and cashews feel like self-care in a handful.

Bananas, oats and yoghurt are simple, soothing staples.

When we pair these with wholegrain goodness like brown rice, kumara or wholegrain bread, we help more of that tryptophan reach our beautiful brain.

Foods that can dim our glow ✨🚫

Sometimes, without realising, we eat things that get in the way. Heavy processed foods, too much sugar, alcohol or endless coffees can all play a part in disturbing sleep and leaving our mood flat.

I eat very healthy most of the time, but I do enjoy a few little treats on a Friday night, and I can feel the negative difference the very next day.

I just cannot tolerate the toxins like I used to. As my life deepens and expands, I value feeling good in my body far more than eating and drinking yummy crap. So I have gently changed my habits. I have way less toxic now, and oh my goddess, my body thanks me for it every single day.

"I value feeling good in my body far more than eating and drinking lots of yummy crap."

A gentle reminder…

For me, this is never about perfection. It is about pausing now and then and saying to myself,

"Hey, love, it is always a great day to take care of your body and your mind."

It is about softening into what you know supports you. Let food be medicine. Let rest be sacred. Let yourself be held by the simple rituals that keep you shining.

"Every meal and every moment of rest is a chance to love yourself deeply."

So, if you needed this reminder today, here it is. Your body and mind are worth cherishing. Let us keep choosing little things that make us feel nourished, rested, and alive. 💫
